“Human Capital Management….a wealth of published material….But Progress? Almost none.” Says Tony Manning in today’s FT, and rightly too.

In summary he says that little progress has been made in management research and that “if business schools have failed to come up with new answers it is because there are none”.

His proposals for what business schools should be about are noteworthy not just by the schools but by anyone in business. In particular his belief that graduates “should know themselves better” is a good call at a time when high Emotional Intelligence in business is needed now more than ever because of the changing nature of the social contract at work.

  1. It seems to me that the recognition of the value of a high EI is now widespread. For me it means that (albeit relatively rare) abrasive behaviour on the part of managers can be marked as ‘stupid’ nowadays. Can you elaborate on what you mean when you refer to the ‘changing nature of the social contract’?
